Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
