Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
