The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
