"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several high-profile admirers have publicly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos frequently depict them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to make music."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The trio are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That newfound resilience demanded a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global following.

But the sister act will always be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
