Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

What next for these two sides?

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
